Journey to IRONMAN!!!
In order to reach the level of IRONMAN you must take very carful baby steps to prepare your body for one of the most amazing challenges. My first baby step was the Triathlon SPRINT DISTANCE which is a .5 mile swim, a 17.5 mile bike ride and then a 5K run to the finish line. Now a IRONMAN is a 2.4 mile swim, 112 mile bike ride and yes a 26.2 mile run all in one day.
I just completed the first step! My next challenge will be the Triathlon Olympic Distance which is a 1.2 mile swim, 56 mile bike ride, and a 13.1 mile run. That will happen in 2015!!
I completed my first Triathlon - Boulder Sprint Triathlon on June 1, 2014, I had won the race entry from a Facebook contest from Pace Per Mile. I told them I wanted to race in a triathlon before my 50th birthday this year. I was able to prepare for this goal due to the training plan designed for me by my Coach Richard Kalasky with 02EA. Coach Richard has the ability to help guide you thru the process of understanding how to prepare for a race, what happens during a race and how to recovery from a race. Last thing I wanted was to be hurting so much I wouldn't be able to enjoy the post race activities!
Here Richard is showing me my results of my body scan which is an excellent tool for a coach to see were your body is at fitness wise at the start of your training. This allowed Ricard to recommend other activities then my regular swim, bike and run training which will help me delevop the muscles required to handle the distance of full Ironman.
Here is me after my .5 mile swim getting out of the water. As you can see I look rough. Here is a lesson learned from this that swimming in a pool is not the same as Open Water Swimming!!!! So I now understand that I will have to spend more time at OWS events with my coach and team in order to get to the point were you will see pictures of me running after the swim to transition.
Once on the bike I had energy again and was passing athletes that killed me in the swim. The route was a 17.5 miles ride with a few hills which challenged me to be careful with my pace. Also I needed to learn that this was the best time for me to refuel the body before transition to run.
The 5K run was very interesting for me because at the start of my run my legs felt like butter. But after getting my focus back and getting into proper running form I was able to get in my pace. This picture shows me as I can see the finsh line in front of me. Can you see the burst of energy that came to me!!!!
Wow!!! What a feeling it was to cross that finish line! Crossing it was the first step to my reaching my goal of IRONMAN!!!
There is nothing like achieving your goal. Medals are great but I didn't need one. My smile was my medal. So from sitting on my butt to this finish line, if I can do it so can you!!!
